INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
High sucrose diets have been linked to numerous health problems, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive impairment. The harmful effects of high sucrose diets are partly attributed to their ability to induce oxidative stress in various tissues, including the heart, plasma, and brain (Bai et al., 2018; Lee et al., 2018). Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the antioxidant defense system, leading to cellular damage and dysfunction (Sies, 2017). Antioxidants play a crucial role in mitigating the effects of oxidative stress by neutralizing ROS and protecting cells against their damaging effects.
Telferia occidentalis and Vernonia amygdalina are two leafy vegetables commonly consumed in West Africa. They are known for their high antioxidant content and have been shown to possess numerous health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, and hypolipidemic properties (Okwu & Ndu, 2011; Udoamaka et al., 2020). Telferia occidentalis and Vernonia amygdalina have been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat various ailments, including diabetes, hypertension, and malaria (Nwokocha et al., 2012; Orish et al., 2014). However, the effects of Telferia occidentalis and Vernonia amygdalina on the antioxidant status in heart, plasma, and brain of rats fed high sucrose diets have not been fully elucidated.
Several studies have investigated the antioxidant properties of Telferia occidentalis and Vernonia amygdalina. In one study, Telferia occidentalis was found to possess high levels of total phenolic content and exhibited strong antioxidant activity (Udoamaka et al., 2020). In another study, Vernonia amygdalina was shown to possess potent antioxidant properties and was able to mitigate the effects of oxidative stress in liver tissues (Adegbola et al., 2020).
