INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

These theories are typically associated with traditional grammar, transformational grammar, and other formal approaches to sentence structure.

Grammatical theories are integral to linguistic theory but are narrower in scope. For example, while linguistic theories may explore the role of context in meaning-making or how language evolves over time, grammatical theories are primarily concerned with syntactic rules such as agreement, tense, case, and word order (Huddleston & Pullum, 2020). Linguistic theories, therefore, encompass grammar but extend beyond it, encompassing phonology, semantics, and pragmatics as well (Van Gelderen, 2018). Furthermore, linguistic theories are often descriptive, explaining how language is used in real-world contexts, while grammatical theories may be more normative, dictating how language should be structured.

One of the key distinctions between linguistic and grammatical theories lies in their objectives. Linguistic theories aim to develop models that can account for the diversity of human languages and explain the principles that underlie language structure and function (Chomsky, 2020). These models also seek to understand how language is processed in the brain, acquired by children, and used in communication. Grammatical theories, however, often focus on more specific issues, such as the correct use of verbs, nouns, and adjectives, and the formation of clauses and sentences (Radford, 2020). Although both linguistic and grammatical theories deal with structure, their primary focus and scope differ, with linguistic theories often taking a more abstract and theoretical approach, while grammatical theories are more practical in nature.

Another distinction can be found in the application of these theories. Linguistic theories are widely used in fields such as psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and computational linguistics, where the primary interest is in understanding how language works in the brain, society, and technology. For example, computational models based on linguistic theories are used in natural language processing (NLP) to develop applications such as machine translation, speech recognition, and text generation (Jurafsky & Martin, 2020). Grammatical theories, however, are more commonly used in language education, translation, and editing, where the primary goal is to ensure grammatical correctness and coherence in written and spoken language (Huddleston & Pullum, 2020). This practical application makes grammatical theories essential for language teaching, particularly in second-language acquisition, where clear rules are needed to guide learners.

In summary, while both linguistic and grammatical theories deal with language structure, they differ significantly in scope, application, and objectives. Linguistic theories are broader, more abstract, and focus on explaining language's cognitive and social functions, while grammatical theories are narrower, more prescriptive, and focus on rules that govern sentence structure. Understanding these distinctions is vital for linguists, educators, and language learners alike, as it clarifies the different ways in which language can be studied, analyzed, and taught.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
