THE PERCEIVED CAUSES OF BEHAVIOUR PROBLEMS OF CHILDREN IN HOMES
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Understanding the perceived causes of behavior problems in children within homes is crucial for implementing effective interventions and support systems (Achenbach & Edelbrock, 2019). Behavior problems among children encompass a wide range of issues, including aggression, defiance, and social withdrawal (Shaw, Lacourse, & Nagin, 2019). These problems can significantly impact a child's development and well-being, as well as family dynamics (Bayer, Sanson, & Hemphill, 2019). Research indicates that various factors contribute to the development of behavior problems in children, including genetic predispositions, environmental stressors, and parenting styles (Fearon, Bakermans-Kranenburg, Van IJzendoorn, Lapsley, & Roisman, 2010).
One prominent factor associated with behavior problems in children is exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) (Hillis et al., 2020). ACEs, such as abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, can have profound and long-lasting effects on a child's behavioral and emotional development (Felitti et al., 2019). Children who experience ACEs are more likely to exhibit externalizing behaviors, such as aggression and hyperactivity (Hughes et al., 2017). Additionally, ACEs have been linked to a higher risk of mental health disorders later in life (Danese & McEwen, 2012).
Parenting practices and family dynamics also play a significant role in shaping children's behavior (Reid & Crisafulli, 2019). Authoritarian or neglectful parenting styles have been associated with an increased likelihood of behavior problems in children (Bernier, Carlson, & Whipple, 2010). Conversely, warm and supportive parenting, characterized by clear communication and consistent discipline, can foster positive behavioral outcomes in children (Pinquart, 2017).
Furthermore, socioeconomic factors can influence the prevalence of behavior problems among children (Conger et al., 2010). Families experiencing economic hardship may face additional stressors, such as unstable housing or limited access to resources, which can contribute to behavioral difficulties in children (Brooks-Gunn & Duncan, 2019). Research suggests that interventions targeting socioeconomic disparities, such as access to quality education and healthcare, may help mitigate the impact of these factors on children's behavior (Knudsen, Heckman, Cameron, & Shonkoff, 2016).
Moreover, the role of genetics in behavior problems cannot be overlooked (Burt, 2009). Studies have shown that genetic factors contribute to individual differences in behavior and susceptibility to
