THE IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
In the realm of global commerce, English stands as the lingua franca, facilitating communication and collaboration across borders (Graddol, 2018). As the most widely spoken language worldwide, with over 1.5 billion speakers and counting, English plays a pivotal role in international business transactions (Crystal, 2020). Its dominance in various sectors, including finance, technology, and tourism, underscores its indispensability in the modern business landscape (Galloway, 2019).
English proficiency is increasingly becoming a prerequisite for success in the global marketplace (Piller, 2017). Multinational corporations prefer to conduct operations in English due to its efficiency and universality (Neeley, 2019). This preference is evident in job descriptions and recruitment criteria, where fluency in English often ranks high among desired skills (Czinkota et al., 2019).
Effective communication is paramount in international business dealings, and English serves as the common denominator among diverse stakeholders (Schoepp et al., 2018). In negotiations, presentations, and correspondence, clarity and precision are essential, and English facilitates these aspects (Kachru & Nelson, 2017). Moreover, English proficiency fosters cultural understanding and bridges gaps between parties from different linguistic backgrounds (House, 2019).
In the digital age, English dominates cyberspace, serving as the primary language of the internet and e-commerce platforms (McArthur, 2018). This digital realm transcends geographical boundaries, allowing businesses to reach a global audience seamlessly (Baron, 2020). Whether through website content, social media posts, or online advertising, proficiency in English amplifies a company's reach and impact (Lu, 2021).
Furthermore, English proficiency enhances access to valuable resources such as research articles, market reports, and industry trends (Swales & Feak, 2017). Many of these resources are published in English, making fluency in the language indispensable for staying abreast of developments in various fields (Bhatia & Bremner, 2020). Moreover, English proficiency enables professionals to participate in international conferences, workshops, and seminars, fostering knowledge exchange and professional networking (Flowerdew, 2018).
In addition to facilitating communication and access to resources, English proficiency is closely linked to economic competitiveness (Graddol, 2020). Countries with higher English proficiency levels tend to attract more foreign investment and international trade opportunities (Holliday et al., 2017). Conversely, a lack of English proficiency can hinder a nation's ability to compete in the global marketplace (Guardiancich & Cox, 2019).
English proficiency also has implications for individual career advancement and mobility (Hinkel, 2019). Professionals with strong English skills often enjoy greater opportunities for career progression, international assignments, and cross-border collaborations (Graddol, 2019). Moreover, proficiency in English opens doors to higher education opportunities abroad, further enhancing one's skill set and marketability (Hewings & Prescott, 2017).
English proficiency is essential for navigating the complexities of international business in the 21st century (Seidlhofer, 2018). From facilitating communication and accessing resources to driving economic competitiveness and career advancement, English plays a central role in shaping the global business landscape (Jenkins, 2019). As businesses continue to expand their reach across borders, the importance of English in international commerce is only set to grow (Canagarajah, 2020). Therefore, investing in English language skills is not just advantageous but imperative for individuals and organizations aiming to thrive in the interconnected world of global business (Kramsch & Sullivan, 2019).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the undeniable significance of English in international business, there exist several challenges and issues that warrant attention. Firstly, there is a discrepancy in English proficiency levels among professionals and businesses worldwide, leading to communication barriers and misunderstandings (Graddol, 2018). This gap in language skills hinders effective collaboration and negotiation, potentially impeding business success (Neeley, 2019). Additionally, the reliance on English as the dominant language in global commerce may marginalize non-native English speakers and disadvantage businesses operating in regions where English proficiency is lower (Crystal, 2020). Moreover, the digital divide in access to English-language resources and online platforms may further exacerbate inequalities in international business opportunities (Lu, 2021). Furthermore, the evolving nature of English as a global language poses challenges in terms of cultural nuances and variations in communication styles, necessitating ongoing adaptation and cross-cultural understanding (Kachru & Nelson, 2017). Overall, these issues underscore the need for strategies and interventions to address the complexities of English language use in the context of international business.

1.8 Limitations of the study
The demanding schedule of respondents at work made it very difficult getting the respondents to participate in the survey. As a result, retrieving copies of questionnaire in timely fashion was very challenging. Also, the researcher is a student and therefore has limited time as well as resources in covering extensive literature available in conducting this research. Information provided by the researcher may not hold true for all businesses or organizations but is restricted to the selected organization used as a study in this research especially in the locality where this study is being conducted. Finally, the researcher is restricted only to the evidence provided by the participants in the research and therefore cannot determine the reliability and accuracy of the information provided.
Financial constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
Time constraint: The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.
