CAR HIRING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CHMS)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Car Hiring Management System (CHMS) is an integral part of the transportation industry, especially in urban areas where demand for convenient and flexible transportation solutions is high. With the advent of technology, traditional car rental businesses have evolved into sophisticated systems that streamline booking, management, and customer service processes.

A car rental, hire car, or car hire agency is a company that rents automobiles for short periods of time, generally ranging from a few hours to a few weeks. It is often organized with numerous local branches (which allow a user to return a vehicle to a different location), and primarily located near airports or busy city areas and often complemented by a website allowing online reservations. Car rental agencies primarily serve people who require a temporary vehicle, for example those who do not own their own car, travelers who are out of town, or owners of damaged or destroyed vehicles who are awaiting repair or insurance compensation. Car rental agencies may also serve the self-moving industry needs, by renting vans or trucks, and in certain markets other types of vehicles such as motorcycles or scooters may also be offered. Alongside the basic rental of a vehicle, car rental agencies typically also offer extra products such as insurance, global positioning system (GPS) navigation systems, entertainment systems, mobile phones, portable WiFi and child safety seats. The starting point of Car renting is really unknown as said by Thomas Pretty; he also mentioned that many beliefs that Joe Saunders was the first man to start a Car renting company. According to Thomas Pretty, charges were calculated with the help of mileage tracking device. Many people became interested in the Car rental business and hence got involved. Car renting became more popular as years pass by. Today Car renting services is found all over the world, especially in the developed and developing countries. To make this service more popular and accessible to the public it has been transform into a web base system and connected to the internet were everyone can be able to have access to it.

To implement the car hiring management system, the technologies adopted for the development of the system and are Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML), Java script, pHp (Hypertext preprocessor) and MySql database. These technologies were chosen because they are well suited for web-based applications.

HTML is the acronym for hypertext markup language. It is the basic language used to develop web content. It uses tags to represent commands. Every tag have a specific function.

Java script is a scripting language that helps in making web pages dynamic. It is also used for front end processing of captured data from web forms.

pHp is a recursive acronym and it means PHP hypertext pre-processor:. It is used to link the data in web-page forms to the MySql database.

Mysql is a server side database technology for web-based or network-based applications.

The source code below is used to add new car and update car status to database.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the advancements in car rental systems, there still exist challenges in effectively managing car hiring services. These challenges may include inefficient booking processes, lack of real-time monitoring of vehicle status, and difficulties in fleet management.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of Car Hiring Management Systems (CHMS) in improving the efficiency and reliability of car rental services. Specific objectives include:

i.                 To evaluate the impact of CHMS on streamlining the booking process.

ii.                To determine the effectiveness of CHMS in real-time monitoring of vehicle status.

iii.             To find out the impact of CHMS on enhancing fleet management efficiency.

1.4 Research Questions

i. What is the impact of CHMS on streamlining the booking process?

 ii. What is the effectiveness of CHMS in real-time monitoring of vehicle status?

 iii. How does CHMS impact fleet management efficiency?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Hypothesis I

H0: There is no significant impact of CHMS on streamlining the booking process.

H1: There is a significant impact of CHMS on streamlining the booking process.

Hypothesis II

H0: There is no significant effectiveness of CHMS in real-time monitoring of vehicle status.

H2: There is a significant effectiveness of CHMS in real-time monitoring of vehicle status.

Hypothesis III

H0: There is no significant impact of CHMS on enhancing fleet management efficiency.

H3: There is a significant impact of CHMS on enhancing fleet management efficiency.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be valuable for car rental businesses, software developers, and policymakers in understanding the effectiveness of CHMS in improving operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. It will also contribute to the body of knowledge in transportation management systems.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the evaluation of Car Hiring Management Systems (CHMS) and its impact on the efficiency of car rental services. It will involve data collection from car rental companies utilizing CHMS in urban areas.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

Limitations of this study may include the availability of data from a limited number of car rental companies, the geographical scope limited to urban areas, and potential biases in respondents' feedback.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Car Hiring Management System (CHMS): A software system designed to manage the operations of car rental businesses, including booking, vehicle tracking, and fleet management.

Efficiency: The ability to accomplish tasks with minimal waste of time and resources.

Fleet Management: The process of managing and maintaining a fleet of vehicles, including acquisition, maintenance, and disposal.

Real-time Monitoring: Continuous monitoring of vehicle status and location with instant updates.
